2012 IEEE-USA Congressional Fellow. Serve in U.S. Congress as a technology and science policy advisor to Representative Steve Israel (NY2).

Evaluate and make recommendations regarding energy and environment policies. Brief the Congressman on innovation, energy, environment, manufacturing, and science issues.

2006—Present. Engineering Leadership Institute, University of Texas Cockrell School of Engineering, Center for Lifelong Engineering Education. Lead Faculty

Collaborated with a cross section of leaders from government, academia and industry  (small, medium and large enterprises) to create an Engineering Leadership Certification Program. Teach Communication Skills, Presentation Skills, Strategy, Execution and Innovation Management, Risk Management, Negotiation Skills, Engineering Ethics, using an experiential approach. Prepare executives for briefings and board presentations.

2001—Present. Competitive Focus – Austin, Texas. Principal.

Provide training and management consulting to professionals in technology and innovation management, and software project management.  (Accomplishments include earlier independent consulting.)

2000—2001. Stellcom – San Diego, California and Austin, Texas Director of Engineering

Built wireless sales and engineering team in Austin.  Delivered market analysis for regional embedded systems opportunities.  Developed customer proposals.  Managed wireless and embedded systems engineering engagements and client services.  Customer evangelist.

1999—2000. Vignette –Austin, Texas Sr. Manager of Software Development

Managed product design and development of eCommerce toolkits.  Built two technology teams. Managed a portfolio of projects.

1998—1999. pcOrder –  Austin, Texas Sr. Consultant

Managed four simultaneous eCommerce projects in the Americas, Europe and Asia for client (Hewlett-Packard).  Handled client relationships, staffing, scheduling.

1997—1998. Compaq – Austin, Texas Director of Engineering

Managed Network Interface Controller engineering team. Defined NIC strategy and roadmap for both Token Ring and Ethernet product lines. Representative to IEEE Gigabit Ethernet standards meetings.

1994—1997. Sterling Information Group –Austin, Texas Vice-President, Professional Services

Developed strategy for growth and acquisition. Identified business opportunities. Recruited team of 80 software developers. Built tools, instituted processes and built infrastructure to manage operations and  support growth. 

1994. TeraQuest –Austin, Texas Sr. Consultant

Defined a Software Process Improvement Methodology with company founders.   Trained software organizations in SEI-CMM. Prepared organizations for SEI-CMM assessments.

1988—1993. Novell –Austin, Texas. Sr. Manager of Software Engineering

Managed development, QA, testing, configuration management and beta testing for software tools.  Recruited technical team (entry-level to senior architects) during period of rapid growth.  Extensive interaction with customers.

Developed C compiler for RISC systems.  Wrote parts of code generator.

1983—1987. Execucom –Austin, Texas R&D, Programmer

Developed communications interfaces and utilities for financial planning system. Developed a natural language parser and response system.

Analysed data for legislation for Texas public school system. Provided reports for legislators.
